Your Laser Dentistry options | New York, NY

Laser dentistry procedures are one of the fastest growing areas in both general and cosmetic dentistry. The use of lasers in dentistry is relatively new, but their proven safety and effectiveness has given Dr. Doris Girlado of New York, NY to provide her patients with a less invasive solution to a wide variety issues they face.

What Is Waterlase Dentistry?

Waterlase Dentistry uses a patented combination of laser energy and water—a process called HydroPhotonics. Lasers have been the standard of care for many surgical and cosmetic procedures such as hair removal, LASIK, and wrinkle removal. The Waterlase was approved more than ten years ago for hard tissue procedures and has been cleared for numerous additional dental procedures since then.

Benefits of Waterlase Dentistry

  • Fewer Dental Visits! Since you may not need shots or anesthesia, Dr. Giraldo may be able to perform cavity preparations in several areas of your mouth at one visit.
  • Procedures performed using soft tissue dental lasers may not require sutures (stitches).
  • Certain laser dentistry procedures do not require anesthesia.
  • Laser dentistry minimizes bleeding because the high-energy light beam aids in the clotting (coagulation) of exposed blood vessels, thus inhibiting blood loss.
  • Bacterial infections are minimized because the high-energy beam sterilizes the area being worked on.
  • Damage to surrounding tissue is minimized.
  • Wounds heal faster and tissues can be regenerated.

What Are Some Procedures that Can be Performed with a Waterlase?

  • Tooth, bone and gum procedures
  • Decay removal
  • Cavity preparation
  • General dentistry for enamel and dentin
  • Root canals
  • Smile design

What is the difference between DMO and DDS? | New York, NY

Question:  What is the difference between DMO and DDS?

Answer: Nothing

Many of you may have noticed that dentists have either a D.D.S. or a D.M.D. after their name and you may have wondered what the difference is. Here, in a very condensed form, is the story:

Dental schools in the United States award two different degrees to graduating dentists: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Despite the difference in names, DMD and DDS mean essentially the same thing, and one is not superior or inferior to the other. DDS was the original degree, but this changed 1867 when HarvardUniversity opened their School of Dental Medicine. Harvard only prints their diplomas in Latin.  If Doctor of Dental Surgery was translated into Latin it would read Chirurgae Dertium Doctoris or C.D.D. Harvard thought that too many people would be confused by C.D.D. so they decided to change the name to Dentariae Medicinae Doctor or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

There are currently 58 dental schools in the United States including one school in Puerto Rico). Of these schools, 36 give DDS degrees and 22 give DMD degrees. The American Dental Association is aware of the public confusion and has made numerous suggestions on how to address it including:

  1. Eliminate the DMD degree,
  2. Eliminate the DDS degree, OR,
  3. Eliminate both DMD and DDS.

The American Dental Association would then create a new degree that all dental schools would agree to use. Thus far, there has been no solution and it does not look like there will be one anytime soon.

Sorry for the confusion!

Create a beautiful natural smile with Cosmetic Dentistry | New York, NY

Cosmetic dentistry can create the bright natural looking smile you deserve. Whether you are interested in a complete smile design, restoring chipped teeth or want to whiten, we can improve your smile. Cosmetic Dentistry is composed of several different types of dental procedures. Dr. Doris Giraldo of New York, NY offers some information on the cosmetic procedures they offer.

Porcelain Veneers – Fingernail-thin shells are adhered to the front surface of the tooth. Veneers can fix several aesthetic problems with just one treatment.

Whitening – There are at home whitening kits and in office whitening treatments. At-home bleaching kits use carbamide peroxide solutions to oxidize and bleach your teeth.  In-office bleaching (also called chair side, light-activated or one-hour bleaching) uses hydrogen peroxide gels and a heat or light source; these treatments lighten your teeth by six to eight shades in one to three visits, and sometimes less.

Bonding – With the use of bonding gaps, chips, broken teeth, spots and discoloration can all be repaired with bonding. You can regain your smile and confidence.

Crowns and Bridges – Crowns (or caps) are dental restorations that are placed over a tooth when conservative restorations are insufficient to restore form and function. A bridge serves to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

Invisalign – The invisible way to straighten teeth. This is achieved by using a series of custom-made, nearly undetectable aligners.
