Periodontal Disease in Pregnant Women | New York Dentist

According to a study done by researchers from the New York University College of Dentistry, pregnant women with periodontal disease are at higher risk of developing gestational diabetes than women with healthy gums. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes in which a woman develops insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels during the course of her pregnancy.

Not only are pregnant women at risk during pregnancy with gestational diabetes, but a child born from a gestational pregnancy are at higher risk for obesity and obtaining type 2 diabetes later in life. Though there is no current main cause of gestational diabetes, the link to gum disease is present.

A research conducted with 256 pregnant women found that all of the women who had gestational diabetes also had higher levels of bacteria found in their gums as well as more inflammation in those areas than women who didn’t develop gestational diabetes.

With that data, researchers strongly urge expectant mothers to visit a dentist for the sake of themselves and their children.

Uneven Gums? Consider Gum Contouring | Hoboken Dentist

Have you ever noticed that your gums may come up a little bit different on each side? Uneven gums are caused by a multitude of factors such as genetics, other health issues, or taking prescription drugs. If you notice that your gums are too high, you may have something known as gum recession; in which gum tissues pulls back from a tooth and exposes its roots. Gum recession may also be an indicator of Periodontal Disease.

If you have these gum related issues, you should give Gum Contouring a try. Gum Contouring is a cosmetic procedure in which patients use to use to improve their overall appearance. Though it is not medically necessary, it does help the appearance of your teeth shift to an overall healthier outcome.

If you decide to pursue the cosmetic procedure, here’s what to expect. The surgery is performed in a dentist’s office. Using scalpels, lasers, and radiosurgery, the dentist reshapes your natural gum lines. After surgery, you should limit your activities. Your mouth will feel uncomfortable and your gum will feel sensitive and so eating soft foods and over the counter pain reliever will help you recover more smoothly.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay | Hoboken Pediatric Dentist

From a young age, oral health is an important factor in which will affect individuals for the rest of their lives. Baby teeth are the start to an adolescent’s foundation for oral health. What many don’t know is that babies are susceptible to cavities just as much as adults are. In fact, adults are one of the main reasons as to why babies have cavities.

These cavities are known as “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.” This occurs in the upper front teeth; however it still may affect other teeth. One main cause of baby bottle tooth decay is too much exposure to drinks that contain sugar. This can also be passed down to a baby through their mothers! When a mother feeds her child and tastes food using the same spoon, that saliva may transfer bacteria into their children’s mouths.

In order to prevent this from happening, make sure to schedule a dentist appointment as soon as your child’s first tooth comes in.

Veneers vs Bonding | Cosmetic Dentistry | New York, NY

cosmetic dentistry

Is your smile not what you want it to be? If you would like to change your smile cosmetic dentist Dr. Doris Giraldo of New Dimension Dentistry can help. Dr. Giraldo offers many cosmetic dentistry procedures including the most popular, bonding and porcelain veneers. But what is the difference between the two?

Both bonding and veneers have similarities. They both are used to cover dental imperfections. However, the procedures are quite different.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding uses a smooth tooth colored solution which is applied to teeth. It covers stains, and fills in small chips and gaps. After the dental bonding solution has been applied and shaped a specialized dental light is used to harden the bonding material. Once the bonding solution is dried and cured additional layers may be applied depending on your situation. When the process is complete the tooth is then polished. Bonding is used on patients who need one or two teeth corrected.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are fabricated from a solid piece of porcelain. They fit over the front and underside of your tooth covering the entire surface of visible tooth. Veneers can be fitted to lengthen or widen teeth to close gaps or fill in chips. Porcelain veneers are generally used for patients who have several cosmetic problems or want their entire set of front facing teeth made over.

Composite Veneers vs Porcelain Veneers – Which is right for you? | New York, NY

Dental veneers are thin layers of composite resin or porcelain which are fitted right onto the surface of the tooth.  They are very popular among patients with discolored, crooked or misaligned teeth. Veneers are made to give you a beautiful, straight white smile. Most people don’t know there are two different types of veneers to choose from. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Giraldo of New Dimension Dentistry in New York, NY offers some insight on both types of veneers.

The two types of veneers are composite resin veneers and porcelain veneers. The following are facts on both types of veneers.

  • Last about 4-8 years with proper maintenance.
  • Made of high quality reinforced plastic. Given today’s high-end technology these veneers look and feel very good, but under pressure they can damage quite easily.
  • Have a porous surface, which can affect their look after years of use.
  • Stain more easily. Often needing whitening treatments to maintain their appearance.
  • Chip easily.

  • Porcelain veneers on the other hand last up to 25 years and do not require as much maintenance.
  • Made of high quality porcelain, natural in color and more resistant.
  • Maintain strength and appearance over several decades.
  • Do not stain because of the non-porous material.

Ultimately the choice is yours as to which type of veneer you choose to give you that beautiful smile you have always dreamed of. For more information on both types of veneers and to see which is right for you, contact New Dimension Dentistry at 212-750-4590 or
