Uneven Gums? Consider Gum Contouring | Hoboken Dentist

Have you ever noticed that your gums may come up a little bit different on each side? Uneven gums are caused by a multitude of factors such as genetics, other health issues, or taking prescription drugs. If you notice that your gums are too high, you may have something known as gum recession; in which gum tissues pulls back from a tooth and exposes its roots. Gum recession may also be an indicator of Periodontal Disease.

If you have these gum related issues, you should give Gum Contouring a try. Gum Contouring is a cosmetic procedure in which patients use to use to improve their overall appearance. Though it is not medically necessary, it does help the appearance of your teeth shift to an overall healthier outcome.

If you decide to pursue the cosmetic procedure, here’s what to expect. The surgery is performed in a dentist’s office. Using scalpels, lasers, and radiosurgery, the dentist reshapes your natural gum lines. After surgery, you should limit your activities. Your mouth will feel uncomfortable and your gum will feel sensitive and so eating soft foods and over the counter pain reliever will help you recover more smoothly.
For more information on how gum contouring will benefit your smile call New Dimension Dentistry in New York, NY at 212-750-4590 or visit www.newdimensiondentistry.com.

Dental Implants, an Overview | New York, NY

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Dental implants natural-looking and feeling and under proper conditions, such as placement by a diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime.

What do Dental Implants Do?

•Replace one or more teeth

•Support a bridge and reduce the need for a partial denture.

•Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

Types of Implants

•Endosteal (in the bone): Most commonly used type of implant. Screws, cylinders or blades are surgically placed into the jawbone.

•Subperiosteal (on the bone): These are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework

Dental Implants vs Dentures or a Bridge

Esthetically, dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. Since dental implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often happen with bridgework and dentures.

Neighboring teeth are not changed to support the implant as with a bridge. More of your own teeth are left untouched, a significant long-term benefit to your oral health.

Dental implants are secure. You don’t have to worry when speaking or eating. No messy pastes and glue. You will go about your daily routine with confidence and comfort.

The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable. They are considered an excellent option for tooth replacement.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Ideally you need to be in good oral health and have adequate bone in your jaw to support the implant. In addition you will need healthy gum tissue, free of periodontal disease.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Dental implants are like your own teeth. You will have to treat them with the same oral care you do your real teeth. Brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist for regular checkups.  After treatment, your dentist will work with you to develop the best care plan for you. Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

Why are my teeth stained and yellow? | New York, NY

Are you tired of having yellow, stained teeth, despite your strict daily dental hygiene? You are not alone. Dr. Doris Giraldo of New York, NY says that there are millions of people suffering from the same problem. So if you brush, floss and visit your dentist regularly then why are your teeth still discolored? This happens because the outer layers of your teeth get stained over the years by consumption of beverages with caffeine, soda, wine and smoking.

When these outside sources of staining are left to sit on the teeth all day until your next brushing, the dentin on your teeth becomes yellowish or darkened. The best way to help your stained discolored teeth is with one of the easiest cosmetic dentistry procedures, professional tooth whitening.

Contributing factors to yellowing, stained teeth:

  • Tetracycline based antibiotics used before the age of 8 years old
  • Excessive exposure to fluoride as a child
  • Internal bleeding due to trauma
  • Discoloration due to a health condition
  • Natural aging- as time goes by enamel gets thinner and thinner and will get a yellowish hue
  • Soda
  • Wine
  • Smoking
  • Caffeine

Simple rules to live by to try and stop the yellowing process:

  • Visit your dentist regularly for teeth cleanings
  • Rinse your mouth out with water several times throughout the day
  • Use toothpaste with whitening agents

One of the best ways to whiten your teeth is to visit your dentist for professional tooth whitening. Contact Dr. Doris Giraldo and make an appointment to get that beautiful smile you have always dreamed of at (212) 750-4590 or visit our website.

The Most Difficult Smile Design, Matching One Front Tooth | New York, NY

Matching one front tooth is the most difficult cosmetic challenges. Not only does the shade have to be spot on but it has to blend in various light, daylight, fluorescent and incandescent.  The shape has to blend with the surrounding teeth.

A very translucent porcelain veneer was the best choice for this situation.

Composite Veneers vs Porcelain Veneers – Which is right for you? | New York, NY

Dental veneers are thin layers of composite resin or porcelain which are fitted right onto the surface of the tooth.  They are very popular among patients with discolored, crooked or misaligned teeth. Veneers are made to give you a beautiful, straight white smile. Most people don’t know there are two different types of veneers to choose from. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Giraldo of New Dimension Dentistry in New York, NY offers some insight on both types of veneers.

The two types of veneers are composite resin veneers and porcelain veneers. The following are facts on both types of veneers.

Composite:

  • Last about 4-8 years with proper maintenance.
  • Made of high quality reinforced plastic. Given today’s high-end technology these veneers look and feel very good, but under pressure they can damage quite easily.
  • Have a porous surface, which can affect their look after years of use.
  • Stain more easily. Often needing whitening treatments to maintain their appearance.
  • Chip easily.

Porcelain:

  • Porcelain veneers on the other hand last up to 25 years and do not require as much maintenance.
  • Made of high quality porcelain, natural in color and more resistant.
  • Maintain strength and appearance over several decades.
  • Do not stain because of the non-porous material.

Ultimately the choice is yours as to which type of veneer you choose to give you that beautiful smile you have always dreamed of. For more information on both types of veneers and to see which is right for you, contact New Dimension Dentistry at 212-750-4590 or www.newdimensiondentistry.com.

Crowns and Dental Bridges, A Permanent Fixture for a Perfect Smile | New York, NY

Crowns and bridges are dental prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Unlike dentures, which can be taken out, crowns and bridges can only be removed by a dentist. Dr. Giraldo of New Dimension Dentistry in New York, specializes in crowns and bridges and would like to offer some insight into this popular procedure.

Dental Bridge

Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are cemented to existing teeth or implants that surround an empty space, serving as anchors for the bridge. Porcelain is the most common material choice because it can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Crowns

A crown covers a damaged tooth. They are used for various reasons such as strengthening a damaged tooth, improving the tooth’s appearance or shape and to fix alignment issues.  As with bridges, crowns can be made of porcelain.

When would I need a crown?

  • To attach a bridge
  • Replace a filling when not enough tooth remains
  • Protecting weak teeth
  • Fractured tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a discolored tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has had a root canal

Crowns and bridges are fairly easy to take care of. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing and seeing your dentist on a regular basis. Also, steer clear of chewing hard foods such as ice. Follow these simple rules and your crowns and bridges could last a lifetime!
