The Positives and Negatives of Pacifiers | New York Dentist

One of the most debated topics in pediatric dentistry spawns from the idea of pacifiers. Are they really negatively affecting your child’s life? Pacifiers have a reputation of some sort of being very negative to the health of your child’s teeth. Here are the negatives and the positives that pacifiers bring into your child’s life.

Negatives:

It is no secret that the use of pacifiers is a hard one to break. Children become attached to their pacifiers because they simulate a natural sort of comfort. Oftentimes, parents struggle with weaning their child off of a pacifier. Parents should be aware that a child should stop using their pacifier by the age of 2, as that is when the alignment of their teeth become more permanent, and the use of a pacifier severely affects the placement of teeth.

Positives:

Believe it or not, the use of pacifiers does have positives. Aside from the natural comfort factor that pacifiers bring to the table, pacifiers help prevent or reduce the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS. A baby with a pacifier does not sleep as deeply as those who sleep without a pacifier.

Periodontal Disease in Pregnant Women | New York Dentist

According to a study done by researchers from the New York University College of Dentistry, pregnant women with periodontal disease are at higher risk of developing gestational diabetes than women with healthy gums. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes in which a woman develops insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels during the course of her pregnancy.

Not only are pregnant women at risk during pregnancy with gestational diabetes, but a child born from a gestational pregnancy are at higher risk for obesity and obtaining type 2 diabetes later in life. Though there is no current main cause of gestational diabetes, the link to gum disease is present.

A research conducted with 256 pregnant women found that all of the women who had gestational diabetes also had higher levels of bacteria found in their gums as well as more inflammation in those areas than women who didn’t develop gestational diabetes.

With that data, researchers strongly urge expectant mothers to visit a dentist for the sake of themselves and their children.

Do You Already Have Periodontal Disease? | New York Dentist

Did you know that many individuals already living with Periodontal Disease, or gum disease, don’t actually know they have it? While this sounds a little crazy, Periodontal Disease comes in three different stages and many don’t notice it until the problem worsens. Here’s a breakdown of the three stages in which Periodontal Disease follow:

Stage 1 – Gingivitis Presence

This is the most treatable stage of Periodontal Disease. It affects only the gums and is easily treatable if you work quickly with your dentist. Symptoms of stage one include: Red Gums, Gum pain, and slight bleeding when brushing your teeth.

Stage 2 – Periodontitis

At this stage, it is safe to say that your condition has worsened at a significant rate. This stage stems from untreated gingivitis. Symptoms of this stage include: Yellowing of the teeth, buildup of plaque, receding gums, and loose teeth.

Stage 3 – Advanced Periodontitis

At this stage, the pain and discomfort you may have experienced before has worsened. This occurs because it not only deals with your gums; your teeth and the bone underneath are being largely affected. Symptoms of this stage include: Halitosis – or an ongoing bad breath- , Pus buildup in the gums, and teeth loss.

If you experience any of these symptoms from any of these stages of Periodontal disease, or if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call Dr.Giraldo!

New York Pediatric Dental | Does My Child Need Pediatric Sealants?

Pediatric sealants are essential in protecting your child’s permanent molar teeth, as these teeth are the most susceptible to tooth decay and cavities. Many parents are still confused on what exactly pediatric sealants are and how they will benefit their child’s oral health.

Dr. Giraldo of New Dimension Dentistry thorough explains that pediatric sealants are preventive treatments that involve the placement of a plastic material on the chewing surfaces of the back molars. So why are the molars more susceptible to cavities than other teeth?

Dr. Giraldo emphasizes that the back molars are usually not protected by saliva and fluoride, which eventually allows plaque and bacteria to accumulate. Gum Contouring Promotes Good Oral Health | New York Dentist

Gum contouring is the ideal cosmetic procedure for individuals who desperately want to have natural looking gum. Although gum contouring is commonly known to enhance and rejuvenate smiles, the procedure is also ideal for improving one’s oral health.

Over the course of time poor oral habits can lead to the formation of deep gum pockets that allow for the accumulation of bacteria. In this situation, gum contouring is the simplest method to remove excessive gum tissue that has been exposed to a significant amount of calculus and plaque. Without gum contouring to remove infected gum tissue, all of the following may occur:

  • Bleeding Gums
  • Swollen or Red gums
  • Sensitive Teeth
  • Permanent Tooth Loss

Only a professional can determine if gum contouring is the right cosmetic procedure to improve you oral hygiene so call New Dimension Dentistry in New York, NY.

There are a variety of treatment options for periodontal disease offered by New Dimension Dentistry, however, Dr. Giraldo advises patients to take their dietary guidelines into consideration.

Dr. Giraldo lists the following foods that are proven to help treat periodontal disease:

  • Vitamin C- eating foods such as oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines puts individuals at a lower risk of gum disease and periodontal disease.
  • High quality meat- Dr. Giraldo recommends buying organic and hormone-free meats in order for patients to treat periodontal disease.
  • Raw, organic Veggies- eating raw vegetables stimulates the production of saliva that removes plaque and food particles in the mouth.
  • Drink plenty of water- drinking a sufficient amount of water balances the pH levels in the mouth. An unbalanced pH in the mouth catalyzes gum disease and periodontal disease.
