A Same Day Crown vs. One From a Lab
A same day crown is made using computer-aided design or manufacturing to create it right in the dentist's office. It provides a more convenient option than the traditional way of getting customized crowns which involves sending an impression of the tooth to a dental lab.
The traditional way of getting crowns can be highly inconvenient if you have a busy schedule since it requires making multiple trips to the dentist's office, and you’ll typically have to wait at least two weeks to get a crown.
Comparing a same day crown to a traditional crown
The following is a detailed look at both types of dental crowns to better understand their similarities and differences:
Traditional crowns
Getting a regular crown requires two dental appointments. The first is used to prepare the patient’s tooth by removing enamel from its sides. An impression of the tooth is also taken and sent to a dental lab where restorations are made. A temporary crown goes over the prepared tooth to finish the first appointment. The temporary crown serves as artificial enamel and protects the tooth from bacteria and acids in the mouth.
Technicians in the dental lab make a custom crown using the impression and send it back to the dentist within two weeks. The patient comes back for a second appointment when the crown is ready. The temporary crown comes off, and the custom crown is cemented into place. This ends the process.
Traditional crowns can be made from various materials like gold, metals-fused-to-porcelain, ceramics, and metal alloys. This gives patients a wider range of options since same-day crowns can only be made from ceramic.
Same day crowns
Same day crowns are made onsite, allowing patients to get customized crowns during a single appointment. It involves preparing the patient’s tooth and using digital images to create a 3D model of it. Computer-aided design is used to design the crown on a computer screen, while computer-aided manufacturing is used to make the crown out of a ceramic block. It typically takes about 20 minutes for a custom crown to be milled onsite. The patient gets to avoid having to deal with a temporary crown.
The custom crown is placed on the patient’s tooth during the same visit, restoring the person’s smile.
Key differences between a same day crown and a traditional crown
Some of the critical differences patients should go over when deciding between traditional or same day crowns include:
- Traditional crowns can be made from a wide range of materials, while same day crowns can only be made from ceramics. Ceramic crowns provide excellent aesthetics, but they are not as durable as gold or metal-fused crowns
- Same day crowns are the more convenient options
- Same day crowns are made to a higher level of precision, so less enamel is removed during the procedure
